9" rebuild tech day?

Postby akaFrankCastle » Wed Mar 11, 2015 8:47 am

Here's a placeholder and feeler for a tech day. The 9" in Stroppe'd is starting to make stranger sounds. It's always made some noise. Now it's becoming troublesome. So, it's time for a rebuild.

I can host said event at my place in Colorado Springs. We could do some sort of portable, hand held breakfast nourishment.

The catch is I've never rebuilt a 9 and would be looking for a subject matter expert to lead the work.

Anyone interested in leading?
Anyone interested in participating?

March is packed full for me. April is looking quite promising.

Interested. I'd like to rebuild mine at some point or at least know how to inspect mine to see if it needs rebuilt.

I don't know how long the rebuild process takes, but I was thinking this could be a max participation event. Maybe get 2-3 axles together and have groups working on each while one overlord, er, instructor talks us through the process while a large drum is pounded in the background.

Perhaps we can get someone to chime in on what all needs to be purchased to make this happen. I'd like to rebuild everything on my axle, minus the brakes. And I'm certain I will be purchasing new gears.

2-3 no way, 1-2 maybe, 1 for sure. Especially if it's a complete rebuild. Stock rebuild or? I can post up what you need.

You'd need a rebuild kit, gears if you're doing them, and wheel bearings. It'd be worth dropping the center section to verify what size carrier bearings you've got. Mine are larger than stock and it caused some consternation and a parts run.

Tools to consider torque Wrench, dial indicator & magnetic stand ,spanner Wrench for pre-load ,slide hammer with hub adapter if the axles haven't been out before. Maybe a extra crush sleeve just in case. A torque multiplier is nice for setting the crush sleeve.

I'm looking at a stock rebuild. It is a 4.11 trac lock.

Hopefully it's a 4 pinion trac lock. The 2 pinion ones tend to break. I can remember mine, Drew's, Shawn's.

I'm thinking its a 2 pinion. I've read the only 4 pinion ones came with 31 spline axles. And it would be my luck to have the inferior of the two options.

They can be found in 28 spline flavor too. '76-'77 Broncos had the 4-pinion.

Dont waste your time with a regular crush sleeve. Buy the shimmable pack that replaces the crush sleeve. Under hard use and acceleration the crush sleeves can collapse.

Depends on who attends. If we get several folks that know how to do it, then 3-4 is doable. Doing the 9" and D44 on my rig to most of an afternoon with Kinder, Crawlercreations, and Viper present.

I'd love to attend this, I would combine it with a work trip if the date works out.

I never worked on any differentials before, although I destroyed a couple of them :)

The 9in is the easiest to set-up for sure. No need to press anything apart to change shim packs.

I'm in, I'll pull my carrier out this weekend to figure out what size bearings I need. Where's the best place you guys have found to get a rebuild kit?

Can we get Chorizo buritos? Those are the best.

I ordered my rebuild kit from Wildhorses. Seems pretty legit but I'm obviously ignorant on these things or I'd have already rebuilt it myself.

I don't remember where we got burritos from last time in the Springs but I don't think chorizo will be a problem.

might want to watch the ring gear bolts. The Yukon kit that was used the rear of my 69 ring gear bolts bottomed out on the ARB carrier. not sure why mine would have been different from thousands of others.. but I don't discount the PO either..

I just moved to Denver about 6 months ago and just found this group. I have a 1973 Bronco but it is still in Wisconsin in my storage unit. I have never rebuilt a 9" but would love to come if you are still going to make this happen.

We're definitely still interested in making it happen. We're just awaiting a volunteer to lead the rebuild. I'm afraid 20 guys huddled around my laptop, watching a YouTube video just isn't going to cut it on this one.

Once we do find that fearless leader, we'll get things formalized and push an email out to all members.

In the meantime, where are the pictures of this Cheesehead Bronco? :)
