Required/suggested set up?
Prospects of damage?

I know trail damage has a run down. Would be nice to hear the Bronco owner perspective.

Wheeler Lake

Postby Kinder » Mon Jul 21, 2014 5:43 pm

I ran it a couple of years ago when my Bronco was just the Dirty Donkey. 33's on 3.5" lift, front locker only, 302 w/ C4. It did great, and a nearly stock Toyota Tacoma made it up to the bowling ball area by just gunning it. I didn't have any damage, there are some bypasses for the "Flopper" & "V Cut." Bnut ran it last year with his uncut on 31's, I think he ended up rubbing the fenders, but no damage either.

I'm a maybe. I have not done much of anything with the Bronco since Moab and there a some things that need to be gone through before I get it back on the trail. I'll do an assessment and see if I can get it together in time.

Being on a weekend we are bound to hit traffic. It's an in/out trail. With that being said I'd like to be on the trail by 8am or earlier.

With a small group of capable rigs, I'm guessing up and down in 2-3hrs. But the larger the group...well ya know!

This trail has gotten harder over the years. A good thing I think! I remember when the bypass to V-notch was just that. Now it's an obstacle all it's own!

Just watch your speed thru Alma. They like to speed trap! When you off-load your rigs at Montgomery lake, turn the tow rigs so that are facing out. It might be very difficult to get out otherwise depending on the crowds. There are two ways into the trailhead. There is 39.312293, -106.059475 that allows you to travel up the valley floor, but it gets dusty. Or 39.312293, -106.059475, which all you do is not turn and you can't miss it, dusty too, just not as long.

And STAY THE TRAIL, but I know I don't have to tell you guys that.

Have fun and post pics!

Yep. If we get to the trail head at 8am that means leave denver at 6.

If trail traffic isnt bad and everyone is equiped we could be off the trail by noon. But watching other forums and facebook groups it seems like its been really busy as of late. Thats why I choose an early start.

Depending on where I am at with my engine swap, I would like to go. If mine isn't ready and someone has a passenger seat open, I would love to get on board! ToolMan-- if you are able to go and are going solo, I'd jump in with you if that is ok.

Shouldn't be a problem...like I said, if my wife doesn't have me tabbed for something (or if she decides to go for some odd reason). I'll keep you posted.

I'm the guy from CB.com who'll be there on the 16th. My buddy (Jeep Rubicon) and I ('73 EB) are coming from Texas to stay in Fairplay starting on the 10th for about 10 days. We plan on doing about 10-15 trails in the area so if you can do some other trails with us it would be great. Glad you guys are coming to Wheeler Lake. I didn't see a response from Moneypit. We have wheeled with them at OCBR and LEBC Annual Roundup. Jesus Man is also a former LEBC pal.
