Breather removal

I broke the breather tube when pulling the valve cover. You would think this would be an easy fix but it has me stumped. What's the trick?ImageImage

I usually just pull them out. Maybe push it out from the inside? If it’s old it might by stuck on the rubber grommet.

There's a baffle inside there prevents me from getting to it that way. I thought it just pulled off as well. It is super stuck but rotates freely.

I thought those were just a rubber grommet. Probably old and will crack if you force it out.

If you can't break it out, I'd score it with an exacto knife or pneumatic body saw. Heck, a hacksaw blade would probably work too.

That's what I will do. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something dumb.

Yeah. Now to move on to rebuilding the carb. Broke that pcv breather taking the valve covers off to check the valves as I've gone to about 8mpg. Trying to get it back to the 11-12 I used to get.

What do the plugs look like?

Here are plugs from the 5 and 6 cylinders. The others are similar.

After doing the head gaskets back in the fall, I followed the directions from the chilton manual for adjusting the valves which is easy since they are the non adjustable type. Just get each cylinder to tdc and torque the nut on the intake and exhaust for that one. I went back and redid that.

I did set the timing around 6-8 degrees per the manual but probably could advance it a bit more.

My carb hasn't been touched since I did it last in 1994. [emoji16] I must have a tear in the diaphragm on the accelerator pump because if I give it a sharp rev, I can see a little bit of fuel squirt out there.

Plugs and wires have less than 2k miles on them. I did pick up Autolites to replace the ngk's that are in there but plan to do that after the carb rebuild.

Open to all thoughts. If anyone is an expert at carbs, I haven't rebuilt one in 26 years so I'd love a hand. ImageImage
