Hey guys I was wondering if any of you guys have experience with rebuilding the ZF 5 speed & how difficult are they to do.

Re: ZF trans over haul
It's not a hard transmission to work on, in fact I found the layout to be very serviceable.
That said, a full rebuild takes a handful of special tools. Here is a good online tutorial:
There are .pdf's online of the S5-42 / 47 service manual. I would suggest grabbing a copy and read through it to understand the scope of the job.
I haven't tore mine all the way down, but far enough to replace some bad bearing and seals.

Re: ZF trans over haul
Mine was easy! Pulled it, dropped it off at a shop and picked it up a week later! For me it just made good sense to do this and I found a great shop that did it for a reasonable price.

Re: ZF trans over haul
Thanks Digger that's a good start I will do more to educate myself on the process. I think I have all the pullers required.
