Farewell to an old friend
I got a call today from the shipper. At 9:30 tomorrow morning I'll be loading up the 69 and 66 for their journey to Nashville. Had to do some cold wrenching this evening to put the leafs back on the 66. I'd pulled them off to see if they would fix the lean on the 69. As I was in the storage unit looking at it, I couldn't help but feel a pang of regret at not trying to do more with the 66. But, such is life. Tomorrow our 11 relationship comes to an end.
Who knows, maybe if things work out I might figure out a way to buy it back several years down the road.
I just hope he doesn't chop it up for parts. But if that happens, I have his address....

Re: Farewell to an old friend
That is great news. I am excited that it all worked out. I would not want to be selling a Bronco right now. I think you would have to wait till spring to get any real action. Congrats man - feels good to loose 8,000 pounds.

Buying something site unseen that is used is taking a roll of the dice. How can you make an educated decision when the item is 100's of miles away - condition is totally subjective. Resist the temptation to even respond - you did nothing wrong. Take a deep breath and delete the Email.

Re: Farewell to an old friend
What gets me are the comments about the clutch and the transfer case. I put a brand new clutch and throwout bearing in that truck back in July and than only drove it MAYBE 100 miles. As for the transfer case, I don't think I would have been able to drive it back and forth to work several times with a transfer case that "can't drive it more than 100 yards without the transfer case popping out of gear into neutral."
Done with this guy.

Re: Farewell to an old friend
Entourage's advice is good. They're 40 year old trucks, you can't buy one and expect them to be perfect or without issues. I bet all of us in the club could make a list of the stuff that needs to be fixed on our rigs. You've done right by him, let it go. At most, let him know the clutch is new and was functional at the time you parked the truck for sale. Totally get the internal , though. I'd be pretty fried too.

Re: Farewell to an old friend
Never being one who can let something go, I continued to engage with the buyer of my Broncos. After he came right out and said "I'd prefer to send the '69 back to you. It is much more of a project than I thought" I took some time to think things over and confer with a few guys I know who move quite a few Broncos. I then went back to the buyer and told him to send me a cost on the repairs to the clutch and the transfer case. It's been a few days now and I haven't received a response back so I think he's pretty much moved on, which is fine by me. Had he continued to remain belligerent about the matter, Id planned to tell him to get the '69 ready for shipment and I would send him his money back, less the amount I paid to store the '66.
I'm feeling pretty good about the deal now as I have made an attempt to "make things right" as far as the claims of mechanical failure go.

Re: Farewell to an old friend
Yeah,
It's funny how some folks think. In our case, we have remaind in contact with the seller of Drew's. When I told him about the Track Bar bracket failure and subsequent frame damage, he acted like I was going to come after him for the repairs. I had to tell him that we understood what we were buying, a 37 year old truck. We know that there will be suprises along the way and that is part of the adventure. We are not at all upset with him.
You have done everything you need to do with yours. I would let it go unless he comes back to you.

Re: Farewell to an old friend
You were definitely accomodating and did try to make things right. I think too much time has passed to buy it back - it could have a few thousand miles on it from when it arrived.

Re: Farewell to an old friend
You're nicer than I am. I'd tell him to take a long walk off a short pier. All the receipts for vehicles I've sold stated that all sales are final and in as is condition. My '71 had several issues the seller did not disclose and some of them I should have seen when I looked it over. I'm not about to call him and demand that he fix them. I bought an old truck and understood what I was getting myself into.
