Post Eck's Ford 9" rebuild
I am going to start ordering parts and start working on the rebuild of my 9". Thought it might be easier to start a separate topic and thread to post the progress. I am starting with a 66-75 Big Bearing housing with 11" Brakes.

Here is my shopping list and I do have a couple of questions:

BOUGHT already - Wild Horses 31 spine axles (part number 8602)
Yukon Ring and Pinion 4.56 gears (part number YG F9-456)
ARB RD119 differential (4.56/ 31 spline)

MASTER Install kit: Question- There are two different ones available. One for 3.06in. Bore Case and one for 2.96in. Bore Case. How do I know which one to purchase?

ARB twin compressor (part CKMTA12)

Brake rebuild:
Drum Hardware Kit (Oreillys part H7144)
Brake Shoes (Oreillys part BB 283)
Brake Drums (Oreillys part 2611D6S)

Anything that I am missing or need to consider?

Might be a good time to also replace your e-brake cables if they're non-functional. Not hard to do later, but as long as you've got it apart....

Add a shim-able crush sleeve to the list. That way you never have to worry about the thing collapsing on you under high torque loads.

Only way to tell the bore case size is to pull out 3rd member and measure the carrier bearing bore.

Do you guys have a link to one so I have an idea what it is?

The install kit I was looking at getting is: http://www.4wheelparts.com/Drivetrain-D ... G/235-2011

They have the same one for the smaller bore once I figure out which one I have...

This is for an 8.8 but you get the idea.

Is there a way to measure the size suspension lift I have? I just want to double check before I start ordering replacement parts.

Measure between the frame and the axle. Stock was 7" upfront and 8" in the rear.

Both front and rear measure out at 9". The rear leafs are 8 leaf and I don't see any blocks or anything. Does this mean I have a 2" suspension lift up front and 1" added with an add a leaf in the rear?

Most likely. I would guess there is the possibility that the front was 2.5 at some point.

Post Re: Eck's Ford 9" rebuild
I would check brake lines (from the frame to the axle and emergency cables). Those are usually the main issues.

I found when I did my 2.5" lift that everything stayed pretty level. Granted, I have K-Bar-S front springs that haven't sagged at all. :) I think if you go with the 3.5" up front, you will find that the front will be slightly higher. Even after it settles, I don't know if you will be level. Hopefully someone else can chime in on that. I doubt you will see .5" of sag (assuming you have enough weight to sag it .5" to begin with, though I'm not sure you do). I think if you match the front and rear, you might end up with .25" rake but that would be hardly noticeable.

I've got my eyes set on the WH suspension with Bilstien shocks to replace mine, but that's after the engine swap and the body panel replacement projects. :)

Yah, have a heavy Warn Belleview with a pretty stout homemade prerunner style front bumper.

I am looking to place my order for the Ring and Pinion and want to make sure I get the correct one.

Going with ARB 31 spline 4.56 gears.

I was looking at Yukon YG F9-456 ($250) on Summit Racing. Is this the correct ring and pinion?

Does anyone have any comments or suggestions on a brand or something that may work just as well at a better price?

.
$238 and free shipping with PRIME

And yes, that is the right gears.

Don't forget to buy an install kit with the gears.

I'm planning on rebuilding the chunk while I install an ARB with 31 spline axles. So, which size carrier bearings am I looking for 2.9, 3.0, or 3.25? I would assume it's the smallest, but wasn't sure if that changes due to the switch from 28 to 31 spline axles.

The outer diameter of the bearing stays the same, so it'll be whatever your stock one is. If it's early bronco, it's likely the smaller ones.

31 spline axles won't fit the smaller bearing carrier, do some measuring and make sure you have the med or larger bearing sized carrier.

Edit: Justin, not certain, but I think they do change outer & inner. I say this because I couldn't stuff 31 spline axles into my stock 28 spline carrier when I upgraded my axles years ago. Might be a year thing, my '73 had the stock rear housing, axles & carrier in it.

No, I think you're right. I'm used to carriers for 31 or 35 spline stuff.

No, I think you're right. I'm used to carriers for 31 or 35 spline stuff.

Kirk- WH sells a tapered 31 spline for use in the small bearing housing. I believe that's what he is using.

Jason- I believe it's based on the third member. Aftermarket heavy duty third members increased the size of the carrier bearings. I measured the one that came out of the big bearing housing in rebuilding and it was the smallest one 2.89 I think.

Got the last delivery of parts for the rebuild today. Picked up the ARB stuff on Tuesday. Bench full of former $100 bills.

Also spent about 3 hours cutting, grinding, and sanding on the axle tube. Whoever worked on this axle previously was the worst welder (and I should know what a bad welder looks like). Still need to take a wire wheel to it and then I can look at getting the new spring perches and shock mounts fitted and welded on. Then on to paint.
