Ok sweet! What do you guys think of a bumper similar to a prerunner but with square tubing?

Post a pic of what you're thinking about. The problem with square tubing is bending it.

Gotcha. Square tube is a fairly common solution if you're looking at a straight bumper. If you're interested, I'd be happy to build something for you.

That would be awesome Justin, but I love to fabricate and I've built several bumpers over the years for some of my friends.., nothing too fancy , but I like the idea of making it my own, ya know. If I had a tube bender I would just make them out of round 2" or something

We've got a bunch of benders in the club-post up what you're thinking and someone may be able to knock it out for you. I've got 1.5" and 1.75" dies for mine.

I've found DenCol is fair.

Both are good. Dencol has a better scrap bin. If you don't need a specific size c&m has a great scrap yard. Altitude is a little more expensive, but has Saturday hours. Man, I buy too much steel.

Ok guys I've decided on a design for the front and the back will be just a 5x2 1/4" steel tube with tire rack on drivers side, what do you guys think? Also is there anyone that is willing and able to bend a couple pieces of 2" pipe?

Sorry I don't have anymore like that, have any of you heard about using a trailer spindle for a tire rack pivot?

Another thing I have seen is guy's use and spindle, hub and outta shaft. Use the lockout to hold it in position while open. Then you will have a place to hold a spare hub.

On another forum, I saw someone use a hub, spindle, lock out, etc to bolt up their spare.

I used some spare 1.5" DOM, 1/4" wall, for the pivot on my carrier with a 1" grade 8 bolt down the center. Mounted in double shear it shouldn't go anywhere. I had enough tube left over after redoing the tie rods and going with 1 ton ends so that part was free. The main portion of the rear bumper is 2x5, 3/16", steel since I had to buy a full stick when I did the rockers. I'll go grab a pic if you're interested.

I think the main reason most are mounted on the passenger side is that if you're pulled over on the side of the road you can open without it swinging into traffic.

Pick of how you mounted it that would be awesome! And that is a good point about it swinging that way

Here ya go. The DOM is in three sections to form the hinge. It is built with 3/16" thick material so it isn't light but it doesn't rattle around.

Now all I need to do is design the rest of my back bumper around that hinge.
