advice/opinions on a new 110v welder or run power to shop

I recently moved to Franktown and have a "barn" that I will eventually need to run power to and have more recently acquired some welding work to be done, it is lighter steel art type stuff. I have a 220v unit already but no power at shop and it would be a bit to run an extension cord that far from the house.
I am currently in the middle of a major house remodel and hadn't planned on getting power to the shop til well into the 2015 year, however this job offer has changed that.
welder I have is a weldpack 180 Lincoln

my options are:
try and get power there officially either sub from the house or another run from the pole(my 1st choice no idea of cost)

make a 70 foot extension cord to run from house and use my 220v welder

buy a 220v capable generator to run my current welder

buy a 110v wire feed and run a big extension cord to the shop or use mu 110 genny if it could handle it

any thoughts or opinions I think I have about a month before the work needs to begin full specs coming on Monday.

no idea what the budget is for this I just would rather not spend money twice, or on something that wouldn't be used again.

I have an extension cord thats about 60-70' I use in my garage. I've also ran my welder off a 5kw generator with zero issues on both.

Here's my 2cents.


1. I would make a extension cord to use until you can properly run 220 to the garage. Go to HD or Lowes. You will be surprised how often you use a 220v extension cord. Not wasted money.

2. Install 220 to the garage. Since it residential, there is a 80% rule, so put in a 50 amp breaker if you need 40 amps. Don't put in a 40 amp circuit breaker or wire, go 50 minimum.

3. I would NOT waste my money buying a 110v unit, your Lincoln 180 is already limited, make your NEXT welder a higher rated one. Go up, not down. Your quote "I just would rather not spend money twice".

4. A generator is nice, but is another piece of equipment to maintain and is a temp solution in my book.


adding 220 to the garage shouldn't be that much $$$, and if you go that route we can discuss it on CCB.

I just made my 60 ft 220 cord. Cost me $280 with everything from Home Depot. Probably could do it cheaper if you shopped around.

A long extension cord now can also be turned into two short ones later. Id get a quote to run the sub panel, and if it's not affordable I'd make the extension cord.

Definitely go with the 220V extension.

It's cheaper than a 110V welder.
