Post New Tires needed for a 1 ton Diesel
Hi Guys, It's that time already after 30k. I need some new shoes for my diesel. 315/70/17. I have run BF Goodrich all terrains but just don't get the life out them I would like even with rotations and air pressure monitoring.
I tow a 5th wheel and would like a stiff D sidewall with an E preferable. I don't offroad much but need a good tire when I do to get through the mud and soft stuff with this heavy truck.

I've been looking at the Firestone Destination M/T, Nitto Trail Grappler M/T and Yokahama geolander A/T-S
I'm leaning to the firestone but was hoping to get some opinions on them.

Any other suggestions or experience with those listed?

Thanks
Brett

I had the Geolander ATS on my halfton and explorer. I liked they way they looked and performed, even when I took the truck offroad. They blew the white letters of the junk Wranglers ATS's the truck came with.

I have another suggestion if you're open to other opens. The trouble with the suggestion is the tread pattern has changed since the last time I ran them on my 350, so you'll have to do some more research.

Bring on any and all suggestions.

The Procomp AT extreme is another one I added to the list. I've run Procomps before many years ago on a lighter truck and they held up well from what I remember

I would avoid ProComps unless you want to be changing tires again soon. The Extreme ATs on my Super Duty melted off like they were made of marshmallows.

I bought a set of takes offs from a guy and they came with BFG Rugged Terrain's and I loved those tires. Maybe not as aggressive as I would have liked, but they performed very well in all conditions and I got at least 40k out of them.
http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-sel ... re-details

The catch is, they have changed the tread pattern from when I tried them last, but I still hear good things.

Just before I sold the truck, I went thru two sets of tires. Both were so squirrelly on the road, it was scary. Anything over 65 was a white knuckle affair! The first was the Fierce Attitude MT's (a goodyear knock-off brand). I returned those for a set of cooper ST Maxx. I didn't get much of a chance to play with air pressures, and defying logic, I was finding out that I maybe should have been letting air out of the tires to stiffen them up instead of higher pressures.

My favorite tire on the truck are some I bought used. Toyo MT's, but buying those new puts a big dent in your wallet! They rode pretty well, had amazing traction is most conditions and even wore quite well for being an MT. I was even pulling a trailer around in a parking lot in 2WD in 8" of snow when they were almost bald and not slipping a tire. Amazed the heck out of me!

I have Firestone a/t and they suck. Not good in snow and starting to chunk with 20,000 on them. Plus Firestone won't honor the warranty since I didn't buy the tires.

I think my next set will be yokes. Brother has them on his jeep and they are awesome. Just not sure how they are on trucks though.
BFG is about to release a new a/t though. Buddy saw them at Baja last month testing.....

Im currently running cooper STT on mine. They have been an all around good tire but noisy and to me they are wearing fast. Only have 17k on them and to me they have worn a lot. Probably get 25-30k outta them. Only other thing I dont like is they cup really bad. I've tried all the tricks and they still cup.

My next set will be less aggressive. Probably the BFG rugged terrain's.

I got 70K out of my Michelins, they were E rated and a great highway tire. Horrible off road but I don't take my diesel truck offroad much anyway.
I went to a D rated tire next, BFG's, but its really obvious they are a D tire, you can feel the sidewall flex. Will go back to a E rated tire.

Those tires you quoted look great but wear out quickly on a big truck. The guys who have them told me perhaps 25K, depends if you tow or not.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm leaning hard towards the Yokohama Geolanders. They seem to be a solid tire at a fair price compared to the others. I tow up the mountains alot and the truck see's deep snow and mud and pulls a trailer through it when waterfowl season arrives.

Now to get them ordered up and PAY for them,, ouch!

I used the Yokohama Geolanders on my Ram 1500. I got probably close to 50k out of them and I towed a trailer for work about 6 months out of the year. They were great in snow and weren't noisy. I think you'll be happy with them!

I put goodyear wrangler AT's on my F350 about 4 months ago and I am very happy with them so far. I'm about 6000 miles in and they are wearing great ( even though I still need to replace the ball joints on one side ). I was torn between the AT's and the Dura Trac . Dura trac might look a bit cooler but the AT's should last much longer so thats what I went with.

Give me a call and we can work out a deal. Let me know what size you are looking for. Might be a little drive but could be worth it.

Time for new shoes on the 3/4 ton Diesel.

Anyone have any comments on:

Michelin LTX M/S 2?
Goodyear Wrangler Duratrak?
BFG AT/TA KO2?

I'm looking for good highway/town drive-ability, good traction in snow (that big mass of momentum doesn't like slippery conditions), and traction when it's muddy/snowy while offroad (bird hunting/fishing/camping).

The tires coming off are the BFG AT/TA KO. I got 40,000 out of them and they were decent in slick conditions.

Thanks!
Jeff

I had the Michelins on my F250 power stroke. They came on the truck. Hated them, did not clean snow or mud worthless on ice could not wait to get rid of them. Put on Goodyear wranglers A/T s with Kevlar so far so good.

Haven't seen these mentioned; Hankook Dynapro ATM. I have them on my diesel and they are probably the best bang for the buck.

I'm running 10 ply.

Had Michelins 10 ply before, great mileage (70k) and solid in dry weather, not so good in snow.

Went to BFG AT 8 ply, but after 30k sold them.

I have 14k on the Dynapro's and they look brand new.

I will probably buy again. Here on the western slope all the oil/gas rig companies run them.

Erik
