Said goodbye to a great friend
We lost a great friend yesterday. For the last 13 1/2 years Buddy has been our garage mate, long walks companion, home protection, camp guard, ball chasing, ing, snorting, snoring, shedding, loving, trusting and loved best friend. As you so often hear about a great dog, he chose us more than we chose him, literally crawling up into Daniels lap and falling asleep while the rest of the litter was romping, tumbling, and wrestling. He was the perfect puppy for us. We needed a mellow dog for Dan to regain trust, and all who have ever been around him know, if there was one constant about Buddy, he was always mellow. I am so thankful that he let us be the lucky family who got to have him in our lives for those 13 1/2 years. I miss you Buddy, rest in peace.

There is nothing worse than losing a family member even if they have four legs.

Re: Said goodbye to a great friend
Really sorry to hear.
A quote was shared with me when we went through this,
"Your dog might only be here for a part of your life..
but for him
you were there for his whole life"
Losing a family member is tough and I wish you and your family the best in getting through it.

Re: Said goodbye to a great friend
Thank you all for your kind words and support. This has been a tough week for all of our family. I think many of our pets are special, and they become such a huge part of our lives. You gripe about cleaning up after them, about their shedding, barking, jumping up people or the furniture, about having to put them out when they wake you up in the middle of the night... And when they are gone - you would gladly give just about anything just to do it all again.
We have known this day was coming for many months - yet once the choice was made - it was obviously time - we knew it was the right one.
Still - there is a void in our home and hearts that will take some time to heal. I guess I never realized just how much that old dog meant to me.
Thanks again everyone, it means a great deal to me to have some of this support.

Funny how that works. When it became clear that Maggie was terminal last year I came to the same realization. It still hurts to think about her. Hang in there.

Re: Said goodbye to a great friend
Had to leave ours with my folks and then had to put him down just a few month ago. It was hard driving away that summer knowing it was likely the last time I'd see him! I feel your pain as well. They are truly a blessing and are here for all too short a time. It gets easier with time, but then it all comes flooding back with stories like these!

Re: Said goodbye to a great friend
I'm really sorry for your loss. I still remember losing my first dog 25 years ago. He was 6 months older than I was and as a little kid, I did everything with him. Even when he had to be put down when we were both 14, I lost it. I've got a 12 year old puppy right now that is starting to show her miles and it just kills me when she has trouble getting up on cold mornings. I know it'll devastate both of my boys when we gotta cross that bridge.
Just enjoy the memories of him.
