Post Heads install
In the spirit of inevitable Bronco creep, I got to thinking that I ought to replace my leaky intake gaskets as long as I was going to pull my carb. This got me thinking about installing the GT40 heads I've had sitting on my garage floor for forever. I've never swapped a set of heads, but basics seem easy enough. Couple of initial questions: Do the rockers or lifters need to be adjusted? I don't think so with stock parts, but wasn't sure . Is there any differences between the expensive head/intake/exhaust gaskets and the more basic ones for a stock engines? Anyone have any other tips? Anyone interested in a tech day?

On stock sbf rockers they are not adjustable, just torque to spec, you should definitely use good gaskets, quality felpro stock replacements should be fine for you, no need to start messing with special thickness headgaskets in this case, as for intake gaskets, talk to viper, he knows the best part # of those, I can't remember it off the top if my head, I think it's the 1250S but I'm not 100% on that, don't use the supplied valley end seals, just use sealant, I prefer the ford motor craft engine sealant, but Right Stuff works well to, to clean the surfaces only use a razor blade scraper and a piece of red scotchbrite pad along with a very dry, residue free brake cleaner. I also prefer to spray copper coat on the head gaskets, I've always used it on all headgaskets except the fiber and metal head gaskets on some newer cars, but on older engines with common head gaskets I highly recommend it.

I went back and looked at some old threads. You're right the suggested intake gasket is the Fel-Pro 1250S3. Viper, the gift that keeps on giving...

I'm trying to decide between this head gasket: http://www.jegs.com/i/Fel-Pro/375/1133/ ... ProductId= and the basic, $20 head gaskets (http://www.jegs.com/i/Fel-Pro/375/8548+ ... ProductId=). Given the application, does the extra money make for a better, more reliable install?

Felpro 1250 gaskets have problems staying together after a year or two. The 1250S3 gasket is better because it has a steel core. I've run both types. 1250 has the small water port holes that match my AFR heads. 1250S3 has large holes which are just a bit too big for my heads and currently leak. I have a set of Edelbrock 7220 gaskets that I will soon install. They don't have a steel core but do have the small water ports. Water port sizes in SBF heads changed a few times over the years.
