Dash pads: a poll
Looking to get a little info from you guys. I'm about 75% complete on restoring/refinishing the dash pad out of my 72. A little curious to see how many of you guys are running them and the condition of them.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
I bought a new dash cover from WH. I was very disappointed with the plastic-ness (word?) of the cover. It also takes adhesive to put it on and I think would ruin the pad once installed. I sent the dash cover back and did not install it. My Dash is in OK condition.

You left out one choice. I took it off because it looks better. I'm sure it served a good purpose but my Bronco is all about form over function.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
I know what you mean about the plastic covers. My last two trucks have had those installed. IMO, they look like crap. When I pulled mine off this current dash pad, I can see why it was put on. And 224.99 for a new dash pad just ain't cutting it for me.
I plan to recover the current one with some type of material. I don't know what yet. Maybe boat/car vinyl. I'll have to look around and see what I can find first.
Two things I am considering in the refinish process. 1) Installing a gauge pod on top of the dash. Basically adhering it to the foam and steel underneath and then covering it along with the dash pad. I'm thinking 3-4 gauges, including AFR, tach, and maybe fuel pressure. 2) Adding a small metal plate, enabling me to mount a magnetic based device of some sort or another.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
I am buying Sunbrella for my family style Bikini Top and may cover mine with the extra Sunbrella material - may work.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
Mine is split and discolored. I'll pull it someday, but haven't gotten around to it. The condition of my dash pad closely matches the general aesthetic condition of my truck's body, so it looks at home. I'd like a custom cage someday, with a cross bar where the dash pad is.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
I've kept mine, it has a couple of cracks, but years ago my uncle gave me a dash mat, you know the form fit velour carpet, and it looked great with the exception that it didn't stick on there real well. I've still got the mat, but it's rolled up in my garage somewhere. I like it because it hides the bad spots in the dash pad.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
I put a cover on my dash 20 years ago and it's been fine. I don't remember where I got it. It was kind of a plastic shell that fit over the old badly cracked original. I remember I had to cut some of the old dash away around the cracks because it had begun pucker and swell.
This new cover has been on for 20 years and unless I think about it or feel for the edges, I don't notice it at all.
I'm definitely a function over form kinda guy (even though I have nether form, nor do I function well).

Re: Dash pads: a poll
I'm running a stock'ish cover on the original pad, it was done by the previous owner and beside it needing a little adhesive on the lower edge it looks good.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
I was relieved that my family cage allowed me to use the stock dash pad. When you do your family cage, you may rather have a bar across the dash (like JD) instead of a dash pad. The 66-67 pad is a lot thinner than the later models and may work with a horizonal cage bar in front of the dash.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
Well, my plans for the dash pad continue to morph on an hourly basis it seems. Now I am thinking of building up the foam along the top and building in some pockets as well. A place to keep change, etc. Additionally, I am working out how to build in an iPod/iPhone docking station to allow me to my phone in and play music from it.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
I'm taking as many pics as I can during the rebuild/resto/mod. Hard to do when you are running a heat gun and using pliers to strip the material. I need to run by Michaels/JoAnn and pick up some of that high density foam to use to build up the pockets and phone dock areas.

Re: Dash pads: a poll
Cup holders go in the center console. What are you thinking?

Got me there. But I don't have a center console, so...
