Post "Best offer" fishing, NOW "Did I do the right thing?"
You guys can see why I might be asking this question...

If you posted an ad for "best offer" would you be pissed if everyone who replied simply asked "how much would you take?"

I'm getting a little ticked off at the moment. Three guys on the line for the '66 at the moment. Not a one of them will simply say "Will you take $xxx.xx?"

Every one of them has simply fished for a list of parts included and then replied "how much would you take?"

"How much would you take" is NOT an offer. That's a simple lazy attempt at finding out what the bottom dollar is. What every happened to negotiations?

Rant over.

I see your point. I guess I'm that rare breed who has never worried about offending someone with an offer. My offers are typically based on what I believe the value of the item to be, balanced off of what I am willing to pay/what the value to me is. Never really had anyone put off by that, but then again, maybe I've been overpaying for stuff too.

Post Re: "Best offer" fishing
I have a couple of thoughts . . .

The old adage - the one who names the price first looses. I am not of this philosophy, but a lot of people are affraid to name price first. Other poeple are affraid to sell yourself short by giving too much.

Like Zilla stated, people are affraid of offending other people with rediculous offers. Then, what if you take their offer, the other guy wonders forever if he could have got it for even less and kicks himself everyday.

I worked with a guy who would negotiate as sport. He would look at it as a game. So the negotiation part was his favorite part. He was so good, you would end up paying him to take what ever he was selling :)

If you have a price in mind, raise it a couple hundred, and you are off and running. I think it will be an easier experience for everyone to have a set price, then negotiate it from there.

I am VERY happy you are getting Emails, Calls, etc. That is exciting that things do not slow down with the weather - that has to be a good sign.

I can relate to the guys asking what you will take for it. You are the one selling it, therefore to me it makes sense that you would be the one pricing it. We buy a lot of motorcycles and it is difficult to know where to start negotiations without some idea of where the seller is coming from. There is no reason to waste the sellers time if your price is higher than they can spend.

""How much would you take" is NOT an offer. That's a simple lazy attempt at finding out what the bottom dollar is"

On tthe other side listing with no price and only "best offer" is simply an attempt to get an idea what people are willing to give with no commitment to selling.

Just my opinion.

Post Re: "Best offer" fishing
I am one of those negotiation hobbyists.
I thrive on making deals.
that said if someone says throw me an offer I will usually lowball the heck out of it.
Typical reply is "no way I can go that low, I have to get at least $xxx out of it"
that is my starting point and I still will try not to pay that amount.

When selling and somebody says "$xxx firm" I take that as a challenge and will usually pay less unless they wont budge and for some reason I have to have the item.

my advice for selling is as it was stated before.
If you just want it gone then find a fair price and bump it up a couple hundred, this gives you a buffer and will let someone feel like they got a deal.

If you have sentimental attachements then go a little higher if you dont need it gone.
find the number that makes you feel ok to sell it. " if I can get $xxx then its gone"
did that recently with a Ducati 916 I just sold, it hurt but I needed it gone and the guy met my price where I was ok letting it go.

Oh and I'll give $450 for it icon biggin

A fellow Ducati Guy - Nice! I had a Ducati a few years ago. Loved that bike like my own child - would have parked it in the living room. Ducati's are a driving sculpture of design and engineering. Miss that bike.

Lots of good advice here - I have my fingers crossed for you Punisher.

Post Re: "Best offer" fishing, NOW "Did I do the right thing?"
So, I had three guys on the line with the '66. One local, two out of state. I received a ton of questions from the out of state guys, Arizona and Tennessee. As of last night Arizona was telling me "let me get back to you in the morning with a decision." Tennessee simply comes at me this morning with "I'll take it."

So, without a true gentleman's agreement of "Keep me on the line, final decision in the morning" was I wrong in accepting an offer from Tennessee when Arizona was still mulling it over?

I feel a bit like a dick at having gotten Arizona's hopes all up and then to get a PM back of "Guess I waited to long to decide, huh?   " (Direct quote).

Thanks for the reinforcement. Bottom line is I am dealing with two deadlines/mandates: get rid of two Broncos and buy another by December 15th. Dicking around with guys who want to kick tires or take the evening to think over a Bronco for sale for a couple hundred bucks doesn't get me any closer.

I should have money in the bank on the '66 by Friday, so he had the cash, he gets the truck.

You guys make me laugh....

As for the deal...you did just fine in my opinion. With all the BS these days...Money in your pocket wins! You could be sitting around for months with the thinkers or guys waiting for you to come down. Get that thing sold and on to the next one. Remember...time is money. We're all aware of this and the internet has been around for a while now banghead .

Well done and hope it goes through!

Just my 2 cents (probably not worth that :geek: ).

Matt

If the Arizona guy wanted you to hold it for him overnight, he should have said, "Hold it for me overnight." He stated that he wanted to think about it overnight. You did the right thing by selling it to the first guy who said they wanted it and had the ability to close the deal.

Any update on the sale (check arrive, title arrive, etc)?

Looks like it is time to get the other Bronco up for sale!

Buyer dropped the check in the mail yesterday on his way back to work from lunch (he moves fast).

Located the title last night (stacked in the garage along with copies of previous titles dating back to 1978).

Should have the shipper arriving later this week or early next week.

Congrats! That is exciting to make 2 deals in just a few weeks. The "sketchy" buyer may be convincing his wife - I know I had to!

Actually, sketchy buyer is trying to sell his POS Honda, which I am sure is probably a tuner. He's hit me up a couple of times about whether I would be willing to take the car in trade, or if I know anyone interested. I'd blow him off and move on to the next buyer but the kid is in love with the Bronco and I want to give him a chance at it. But, his/my time is running out.
