Post Off Road Expedition Trailer
Ever since I saw Kinder's Trailer I have been obsessed (more than normal) with Trailers. I went to www.expeditionportal.com - a link I got on our forum. It looks like the M416 Army Military Trailers are the coolest for off road because of their size, height, pintle, etc.

I found a M416 here on CL yesterday and it is already gone today and the asking price was $900 - $1,000 (can't remember). This got me thinking of fabbing my own. There is a Toyota Club here in Colorado and a guy in Denver custom built the sickest trailer. He fabbed it in his garage and bought the steel and metal parts here local. He used AutoCAD to design it as well.

Here is the link to his build -

http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/ ... hp?t=13449

That is some crazy fab skills - WOW!

All I can say is, WOW! That is amazing. I didn't see anything on there as to where he got the panels. I wonder if they are part of a kit. I saw someone on Expedition Portal that did something like this. He had a metal fab company made the panels for him. He provided the autocad schematic to the metal company and also uploaded on the forum if I remember correctly.

I wonder how much this has cost him? If it is comparable to purchasing a rusted out trailer, it would be a good deal.

That is sweet, and would be less of a PITA then trying to salvage metal from the ravages of time (like a Bronco trailer).

I read then re-read the article in hopes to hear where the fabricator got the supplies. Luckily, he is in the Denver area. I am happy to contact him and get the CAD file and suppliers if it comes to that.

I would love to do the fab someday, but for now, I have my friend in Utah pricing this stuff out. I am excited to hear what he says. He just got a plasma cutter so he is excited to work on a project like this.

There is a HUGE market for this kinda stuff. The cheapest Utility Trailer on Craigslist is over $500.00 and not cool or trail worthy. This trailer is cool - not Kinder Siamese cool - but cool :).

That is awesome Rob! I like the six and likely wouldn't change it much from the proven design. Thanks for posting - I will get those to my fabricator friend in Utah. I can surf that site for hours - so cool.

Post Re: Off Road Expedition Trailer
This is from Matt:

i quickly priced out the trailer,
axle, spindle, hub- 200$
leafsprings- 75-90$
hitch-30$
lights and wiring-50$
steel-250-300$
total=600-650$

this is just a ball park for materials, it will probably be lower, rough estimate would be around 1000. thats better than what i see them going for, normally around 1500 for a good one. this thing would be brand new so thats a plus. let me know what you think. if he does not want to go all new we can find used parts and build the same thing.

I will add this to the Vendor Section in case anyone wants one. Remeber - this is the trailer only - not the hard top. I don't want top - I want a canvas cover and my mom can make that! smokin

I cannot believe that these can be be custom made for less than a basic Utility Trailer. Very cool.

Check this thing out... with a better camper top, air ride and a flexable hitch knuckle you'd be set!

My bronco could never pull that! I bet that ways enough to make a bronco wheelie!

Been eyeing a toyota bed lifted on what I think are 33's. The guy wants $300 but I have not found the time to stop and look closer at it. Would love to either put a tent on top of it, or build my own camper shell that's 18" deep or so that would allow me to seal items inside. With a family, I need more storage space for camping.

A Toyota bed would be a nice size. Did you end up getting that trailer?

I am shocked at the prices of the Army trailers locally:

I keep watching for a used M416 to restore, but that may be harder to find than my Bronco.

So if anyone is crazy enough to follow in my footsteps of building a bronco body based trailer I may have a few pieces for you. My friend Craig (71UGL) has been collecting tubs looking for a good builder and he is ready to start building on the best of them, which will likely means that some parts will be cut off and left for the taking. These parts are not going to be nice, so you'll need to be willing to piece something together. I'd rather see these panels find their way into a project than the scrap yard. I'll post up as soon as I know what will be left.
