470 truck avenger stumble HOLLEY SAYS NEED THE 670 to fix!!!
I went wheeling this weekend with the Yankee Hill trip and my carb did well other than one issue. I am still getting a nasty bog going up obstacles before the power kicks in. I love this carb so far, it never dies on me like my stock one did and gas mileage seems a little better, but I am getting a hesitation off the line when I dig my foot in. During normal street driving there is no problem, but if I dig my foot into both on the street and offroad I have a stumble for a few second. Its like the carb floods and takes a few minutes to clear out. Once it clears out the bronco takes off and goes no problem at all with tons of power and response. Its getting pretty annoying offroad because I don't have the pedal response I want to get up obstacles and through snow. I have tuned the carb to how the holley guys said in the video that came with it. I haven't switched anything out on the carb (jets and stuff). I have holley fuel pump red in the system. I think its an 8 PSI or so. Its a basically a stock 302. Once I get ride of this bog I think the carb will be great.
Booger, from this board has told me to try a fuel pressure regulator and I plan to, but whats everyone else's opinions on this. What fuel pressure do you set your to????
I also have a different vacuum secondary spring to try but will that make a difference????
I am not great with Carbs so any suggestions would be appreciated, and EFI is not an option. lol

Re: Holley 470 truck avenger stumble/bog before secondaries
I would re-jet it for sure. It's gonna be too rich up here. And yes do regulator. When wheelin turn it down to 1.5-2psi. On the street set it around 5-6psi. Anything more and you run the risk of blowing out the needles and seats. For a quick fix on the instant stumble try and lean out the accelerator pump.
Last time I went wheelin I was stalling and stumbling until I turned down the fuel pressure. It's a great trick to use when bouncing around in the rocks.

Re: Holley 470 truck avenger stumble/bog before secondaries
Tryin to keep up the good bronco karma. I'll throw it in for the breakfast. And yes that is the accelerator pump cams for a holley. I'd look and see what color you have and get a step or 2 in each direction and tune it in from there.

Re: Holley 470 truck avenger stumble/bog before secondaries
http://youtu.be/eiRIfcrc2yAAfter watching this short video it appears i need my cam to be in the number one hole since my truck idles at 600 rpm. Am i thinking of this right. If my truck seems to be boging off the line does that mean it needs more fuel or less fuel off the line. I'm trying to get my head around this carb stuff but its confusing. lol http://youtu.be/w3F3ssOb8lgmaybe I need a different pump nosel Any help is appreciated.

Re: Holley 470 truck avenger stumble/bog before secondaries
It's so hard to tell weather you need more fuel or less fuel when you have a bog.

Re: Holley 470 truck avenger stumble/bog before secondaries
Does this mean anything. There is a cloud of black smoke that comes out, doesn't this mean there is gas not being burned?

Re: Holley 470 truck avenger stumble/bog before secondaries
yep. you need to lean it out some. Black smoke is unburned fuel.

Re: Holley 470 truck avenger stumble/bog before secondaries
Zenzone you might try moving the cam to another. Worth a try first off before going any further. I think I have a bunch of cams around here (boy might know where they are) and your free to try them and if it works you can have it. It is trial and error. Also make sure idle air screws are properly set for highest manifold vacuum. Jets don't come into play much until higher rpm.

Re: Holley 470 truck avenger stumble/bog before secondaries
Just got off the phone with Holley tech, Ricky, (TA guru) told me that the bog problem I am having is caused by the carb being to small for a V8. He says I need the 670 for a 302 V8. He said he will switch it out for me for free if I ship it in. and for $75 dollars if no receipt. He says the 470 can not get enough air in the keep up with a V8 when you dig your foot in,(such as going up steep hills) he says he switches out tons of the 470's for bronco guys to the 670 and it always fixes the issue of bogging out. He said contrary to what most people think, a carb that is too small will cause it to run rich like mine due to not enough air. A carb that is too big will make it run lean. I guess I cant argue with results, the switch has worked for everyone else so I think I will mail mine back in. I hope it works. I will update everyone when I get it installed.
If you have a 470, they will switch out anyone's carb who wants to go to the 670.

Re: 470 truck avenger stumble HOLLEY SAYS NEED THE 670 to fi
Zen - good to hear they will swap it for you. I was wondering about that 470 cfm. I've almost always gone bigger than needed (per cfm calculations) and maybe that's why. Kinda makes sense because I know from prior experience that a restrictive air cleaner (too small of an area) can also make it run richer (right ZOSO).

Very interesting to hear they say step up to the 670. It does make sense for sure. Hope it all works out for you. I guess my logic is all messed up in my thinking.

Re: 470 truck avenger stumble HOLLEY SAYS NEED THE 670 to fi
Reviving a dead post. Anybody else switch a 470 for a 670? I actually went the other way. Six years ago or so I had a 670. I could never get it right. I have a stock 75' (from what I know) 302 that has about 15K on a 1/2 assed rebuild. I could never get the 670 figured out. I had some of the same problems, it would just go puh on the get go and then catch up. Also, going up hills on the highway and what not it just seemed, or so I thought, there was too much carb for my smog dog 302.
Turns out I'm a whole lot better at Craigslist than cab tuning so I sold my 670 and bought a 470. Same stuff, puh on the get go. Today I went up a steep-ish hill (for asphalt) on a county road and I was struggling to make it up. I have a 302, NP435 and 4:88 gears. WTF man?? I thought maybe high altitude issues but I'm only at 6500 Ft. Maybe I'll give the Holley guys a call....
Just curious, has anyone with the 470 or 670 had to swap out the jets for altitude, cams, or discharge nozzle? If so, what did you do and how did it go?
