Cutting sheet metal tips
I'm making patch pieces out of large sections of 18ga. I'm using my grinder with a cut off wheel. My lines aren't as straight as I would like. I'm curious as to what tools or tips the group might suggest for getting cleaner lines so I'm not having to fill as many gaps.
Thanks!

Re: Cutting sheet metal tips
If you have a compressor a nibbler should work with a straight edge or careful cutting.

Plasma, shears, nibbler. Just make sure to get shears or a nibbler capable of going through 18g, cheaper ones might struggle.

Thanks. I'll keep my eyes out for those. Plasma isn't in the budget right now.

Plasma will change your life.
Shears cut great straight, but only straight.
Nibblers cut where ever you push it, good or bad.

I use a jigsaw with a metal blade. Not too bad

Re: Cutting sheet metal tips
I have a Harbor Freight nibble that cuts fine but I have only used it for demo work a few times. I tried once to try and freehand something straight and it didnt turn out too well. Freehand, I find a grinder and cutoff wheel to be the best for me. Maybe because I am most comfortable with it but it seems like getting both hands on it and being careful I get the best cuts. No plasma for me either although I dont doubt it would change things considerably.

Re: Cutting sheet metal tips
I love my plasma, but actually sometimes use a grinder for straight cuts. If I can put the workpiece on a bench with a straight edge, plasma is the go to. Weirdly shaped stuff like rocker panels is easier with a grinder. Make a line with tape and follow the edge. I've also got an electric nibbler that works well, but I don't use much as its a little slow and plasma is more fun. You're welcome to borrow it.
