Post 69 bronco turn signal and hazards inop
Hello everyone! Bought my first Bronco yesterday and here I am looking for help and fixing something already :) Here goes:

I bought a 1969 Bronco yesterday after driving 2 hours to Winter Park, Colorado the day before to drive it. The cam in the steering column is broke per the seller so the turn signal doesn't move back to normal position after turning. I didn't pay it any bother and kept using the turn signal switch assuming it was working outside even though I didn't see anything flashing on the dash. After finalizing the purchase when the seller drove it on a flatbed to my house, I drove it around the block with my brother. I asked him to jump out and check the signals and nothing was on, checked the hazards as well and nothing. I checked the fuse and the relay after talking to the seller on the phone and he assured me they worked because he had tags on it and they inspect it when you apply for collector tags every 5 years. So I know they worked at sometime in the last few years but neither is working now. Feeling like a dumby buying a truck and not even thinking to check the signals and hazards from outside the truck, was too busy going through the body and drive train.

Could that broken cam in the steering column on the turn signal switch cause both hazards and turn signals to go out? I haven't checked the bulbs yet as he delivered the truck pretty late but ill go there first when I get home.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone

Alex

PS. He told me the horn is disconnected at either the horn or steering wheel and that I just needed to reconnect it for it to work. Unsure if that would have any bearing but wanted to mention it.. I'll hook it back up later tonight after work.

Congrats on the purchase and don't feel too bad you didn't check the signals. I am sure it wouldn't have been a deal breaker anyways!! The cam cancelling mechanism won't prevent the flashers from working. However, there is a turn signal apparatus in there that could have broken and may not be engaging when you set the signal lever (http://www.wildhorses4x4.com/product/Tu ... lumn_Parts). I tried installing the cancelling piece a couple months ago and took it out because it didn't work well with my aftermarket Grant steering wheel. My signals all work without it.

Are all of your other lights working properly? It could just be a bad flasher which you can pick up at any parts store. Oreilly's - Littelfuse Blister Pack - Littelfuse Equivalent to BWD FC536 Part # FLR536/552BP.

Hopefully it is something simple...

Seems the brake lights, hazard lights, and turn signals all don't work :) With all three of those lights out and all wires connected to that steering column turn signal switch, maybe I'll get lucky and that fixes it. Would a bad turn signal switch cause them all to go out though? Gonna order one online and cross my fingers.

Hmmmm, looking at this for my year bronco, the hazard lights are not part of it. Maybe this isn't the fix.

1st off, you're in the right place, lots of Bronco knowledge here, Excluding yours truly! BUT...
You know what they say about used car salesman right? Well you just bought the ultimate used car! You're driving a 46 year old vehicle & if your blinkers are the only thing that don't work, consider yourself lucky!!! :laughing2: because it's always something!

PS... If somebody tells you it's a simple fix and that all you have to do is connect a wire, but they haven't done it themselves...yeah, Ugh, you guessed it.

Anyway, welcome and Nice Rig!

Thanks Mickphatmac for the kind words. Ready for the weekend to get here so I can have a little free time to try and figure it out. Gonna order the turn signal switch and go from there. Maybe I'll get lucky. After reading through some of the other problems the guys on here are having with their rigs I realize it could always be worse than some electrical problems. Just want to get mine able to pass inspection so I can enjoy it on the road a bit before we get some snow :)

Also the seller was blowing smoke when he told you it was inspected for collector plates so he knew the signals were working.

The DMV never checks that, at least in my experience.
I have never seen them do an inspection on a Bronco for collector plates.

If that's the case, maybe I can bring it to the dmv while waiting on my turn signal switch to get here and try and register it. :) Was worried they would do a full safety inspection( check all lights, turn signals, horn, etched) prior to issuing plates.

IIRC, the turn signals and hazards run off of separate flashers. So unless both are out (which isn't out of the question), you would most likely have one or the other. I think more information is needed. Do the fronts work, but not the back? Do either come on and stay on? Are the brake lights working? This is totally a Viper question...

If you have no brake lights it's most likely the turn signal switch. Brake lights and hazards and turn signals all run through the steering column and turn signal switch.

I saw a picture of the wiring diagram for a 69 bronco and it didn't look like the hazards went through the steering column. Not till like 73 or 74. Was hoping it would all be connected to that one bad turn signal wire but might not be so lucky.

That's good news Eck, thanks. Only working lights are the headlights. No hazards, turn signals, or brake lights. No reverse lights either.

Probably needs a smog check as well.

Mine was not running when I registered it for collector's plates and did not have it with me at the time. They did not ask to inspect it or anything in Arapahoe County. This was just in April of this year.

I just walked in and got collectors plates with my 69. No emissions.

My bad...from what I understood is that you have to do the smog check for 'change of possession' or when you initially want the plates. Then, you never have to smog again. They made me smog mine before getting the collector's plates. shrug

I, kind sirs, have been misinformed!

They have changed the rules a few times, and then there are the employees, who may or may not have a clue about collector vehicles and ASS-U-ME that all vehicles need checked.

Another option to be aware of, if it will be a long time before it will be in running condition you can register it as inoperative, the tax gets paid but the cost is half and you don't get a big bill when you do change it to plated.

Zoso, this is the diagram I saw at Wild Horses, it made it seem like hazards were not a part of the switch till 74. Is this incorrect? I'd love to think the switch I ordered could fix everything on my 69 :)

Im pretty certain that while it is not labeled on there the hazards go through the switch. After all they do activate the turn signals.

I'm just surprised Viper has not chimed in here yet to tell you that it is the _____________ wire that requires __________ ohms and is connected via the _____________ connector.

See if you have power to either terminal at the flashers. Key must be on for power at the turn flasher. No power=problem before the column. Power=problem at flasher or column. Then look at the column wiring. Should be a 2 pin plug that goes to rear brake/turn lights and a 6 pin plug that goes to everything else. Make sure those look ok.
