351W Cam Options?
I need a more appropriate cam for my 351
Engine specs:
1994 351W roller truck block (E4TE) bored .030" over ProComp aluminum heads, 210cc runners 2.05/1.60 valves - 1.6 roller rockers 9.0:1 compression
The truck came with a Trick Flow Stage 2 hydraulic roller cam SAE duration @.006" 286/294 Duration @ .050" 224/232 Lift @ valve w/ 1.6 rockers: 542/563 Lobe seperation 112°
With the current cam, the low end torque is sad at best. The advertised power band is 2600-6200rpm. I would like something with a powerband more like 1200-5000 rpm, with peak torque 2000-2400rpm. I found this cam which seems like it would fit the bill.
CompCams 35-510-8 Grind Number:XE258HR SAE duration @.006" 258/266 Duration @ .050" 208/216 Lift .533/.544 Lobe lift .334/.341 Lobe seperation: 112° Power Range: 1300 to 5300
I'm curious what you guys are using. Viper?

That's a little smaller than what I'm using.

Here is a desktop dyno snapshot with my engine. I have GT40 heads now but you can see the benefit of going to better heads like the AFR165s.351w dyno.jpg

Re: 351W Cam Options?
I'm a little surprised that there's no real difference between the heads below 3500 rpm. Equally surprised at the size of the difference above that point.

Re: 351W Cam Options?
That is great information and exactly the feedback I was looking for! Thanks! Those cams are similar with the Comp Cams having less duration, but more lift. That chart makes a good argument for aftermarket heads and gives me hope of making near 450 lb-ft with my heads.

Re: 351W Cam Options?
Those heads are a little large. You want a smaller runner to keep the velocity up for better throttle response and torque. Just another thing to keep in mind. Those heads would be good on a 408/427......

google desktop dyno 2000. there is a free download that will let you plug in all your numbers and play around.

A 460 will fit in an early Bronco, at least as well as a Coyote.

Re: 351W Cam Options?
Thanks everyone for your input. I got to drive the truck today with the new cam and it is so butter-smooth, I LOVE IT. Still has the same seat-of-the-pants power it did before, but now it idles @600 and can pull down to ~300rpm. I'm so much more happy with this setup. The exhaust doesn't smell so "fuelly" anymore, the transmission doesn't sound like a bag of marbles at idle and even 75mph highway cruising is more quiet.
