For the last three weeks I've had a Bronco parked in front of my house that doesn't belong to me. Or maybe I should say ANOTHER one that doesn't belong to me. This truck, recently purchased by a kid stationed on Fort Carson, decided to stop shifting when the welded tab on the shift tube broke free. I've been spending whatever spare time I have had put the column back together to get this guy back on the road. Anyhow, in climbing around on this truck I have been noticing things that are off/half assed/basically just hack type work. Which got me thinking about all of the weird/crazy/lazystupid stuff I've seen POs do to Broncos.

So I thought it might be fun to share some of the greatest in PO mods and shortcuts that we have seen.

On this particular truck, so far, I have come across...

Vacuum advance missing from the distributor

Vacuum line to C4 installed backwards

Copper tubing used to connect sections of vacuum line too short to close this distance on their own (hose clamps? nope)

I'm sure there is more I am forgetting.

On my '66 the PO had used caulk to install floorboards. Also, sections of body were bondo'd using pieces of a Marlboro cigarette carton and a lid from a McDonald's cup as backing.

That isn't my Bronco parked there, is it?

I've owned my bronco long enough now that all the dumb PO issues are my own. :) There are times I really want to go back and smack my 17 year old self.

My favorite was the wiring on mine. The ignition, headlights and tail lights were all wired into a toggle on the bottom of the dash, with a pushbutton to start it. Nothing else electrical on the truck worked.

Forgot about this one.

On the Stroppe'd 72 a PO laid down a sheet of 1/4" steel across the front floor and used about 76,481 self tapping metal screws to hold it down. Then welded box steel to the top with posts bolted through. This was the base for the seats he wanted to install.

Oh, I forgot about the double seals on the rear axle with tapered roller bearings. It had both the inner seals for the sealed bearings and the outers for the tapered bearings. I suspect I'm lucky the bearing didn't fail since it had almost no oil. They actually looked really good, considering. Kirk, if I didn't tell you this, the bearings on those axles you got from me have been replaced and are probably less than 10,000 miles old.

On my first EB, the PO put a 289 into it that should have gone into a race car. The guy that bought that EB from me found out that his 19 year old PO grenaded the front end & transmission due to a very heavy skinny pedal. :burnout: .....Wish I still had that engine, I'd be putting it into a Mustang for my dad right about now.

My current one the PO used sheet metal strap to hold the floor board under the dimmer switch up & used a BFH to fit & then weld some "C" channel for both bumpers onto the frame.

Not on the Bronco, but dad's Mustang, the PO used aluminum, covered by an inch of bondo, covered by a stop sign to fix the rust problem in the passenger side floor pan. Real fun cutting that crap out.

PO on mine bugger welded the removable window frames on my '68 to the doors. I think a cutting wheel is in their future since the windows aren't that great anyway.
