Head
I was lucky enough to get a great set of GT40 heads at the swap meet. I've never swapped a set of heads, but from the reading I've been doing it doesn't look took hard. What I know nothing about is how to evaluate their condition. Obviously, I could take them to a machine shop and have them checked out and possibly refurbished, but that's $$ I don't want to spend. Anyone have any advise on how to check out whether or not they can be installed as-is?

I think they should at least be checked by a shop to see if they are true/flat. They can warp and probably make sealing difficult/impossible. I'm don't think there is a way to do that yourself, maybe I'm wrong. I don't know what to look for in the valvetrain.

You just need a precision straight edge and a set of feeler gauges.

use a straight edge and feeler guage like stated above, then pour a little gas in the compression champers, if the valves hold gas they are good. check the valve bonnets and make sure that they are in good condition.

So is the head checked across the long length of the head, or across the short length? or both? diagonally?
What is an acceptable feeler gauge to fit under the straight edge?

You'll have to check specs on what's acceptable. Here's a photo of the pattern to check in. Just make sure you use a precision straight edge and not something like a ruler.

I just noticed some of the lines aren't very clear but there should be 7 lines. There's variation on where to check between manufacturers but the one above is how I check with the addition of lengthwise in the center.

Thanks for all of the tips, guys. I ended up taking them down to Scott at MPG heads to have him take a look at them. Got them hot tanked and cleaned up, and had Scott inspect the valve seats and guides. The good news is that they're in great shape and can be run as it. The bad news is that I need to find a set of rockers before they'll actually work. Anyone have a spare set of stock GT40 rockers laying around? Also, can I use the existing pushrods, or to I need to buy new?
