I think I figured it out...
So, I keep looking at this plate when I walk by my Bronco. And I always wonder what the hell it is. Today, while taking this pic I think I figured it out. Is there a cable end that routes through this to keep the spare tire carrier from swinging out too far?

The Terrible One 1972 Sport uncut, 302, C4 with 1974 column , T shift Dana 20, 3.50 gears w/ limited slip, 1966 U13 Roadster kick panel, and factory power steering.

yes you are correct I have the stock cable on my bronco.It runs from that plate on the frame to a plate on the stock spare tire carrier.

I guess it took so long to figure out because I have yet to own a Bronco that still has a stock spare tire carrier installed. Some PO along the line welded the mounting holes on this Bronco closed.

I still have and use mine. cable has not been needed YET for a sudden latch release.
