I love them - they are light, waterproof, and customizable. I want to add speakers, 12 Volt Outlet, 110 Outlet, Amp Rack, etc. This makes a nice blank canvas to work with - very cool! |

I like it too, but more because ours is LOUD, and having another layer of metal, and a place to insulate will seriously help that problem, not to mention the improvement in heating the ice box... |

Are they steel or are you doing them out of fiberglass or composite materials? |

Post subject: | Re: What's it gonna be? |
These parts are fiberglass composite, gray gelcoat. They weigh about 7lbs.about 1/8th inch thick.Imay be able to laminate foam on the back side for sound and a more ridged part.Easy to scuff and paint or cover in your favorite animal hide. Can also make these out of aluminum, carbon fiber or whatever. Will try to post pictures soon of fitted part. Thanks JGZ |

Wow, great . I had not considered useing fiberglass. I may have another , some thoughts from you all. I am in the commercial glazing industry (need glass for your EB, I am the guy to see) and often we use insulated pannels instead of glass (think in terms of those glass and metal buildings, the metal pannels are what i ma talking about here). Those pannels are a "sandwich pannel" Consisting of 2 thin sheets of metal laminated to a masonite hardboard (the bread of the sandwich) which is then laminated to a foam or other insulating core depending on the thickness of the pannel. Pannels come in 1/4" to 1" thickness typicially t hough other thicknesses are available. I think I will try useing one of those in the same application. I will let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the . |

Jay - That is funny you would say cover in your favorite 'animal hide' because Kinder is going with Zebra print. |

Please dont go buy a bunch of great stuff. It's the wrong density of foam and will not work so well. The foam in my top is a two part urathane pourable type I had in my invintory.I think Iknow where to get it but I'll call some of my old suppliers and see whats up.JGZ |

Some of those foams give off some nasty fumes for a while. With the way these Broncos are holding up, you also have to consider what that foam will be like 15 or 20 years from now. How hard will your grandchild have to scrub to get it off the roof. He's been search CraigsMindMeld for weeks now and hasn't picked up a stray hard top thought in weeks. |

I thought foaming a top was a big no-no as it traps moisture which promotes rust ? |

Post subject: | Re: What's it gonna be? |
Thats a good question. But I've got an answer. This is the same type of foam they use for flotation in the boating industry .Where don't you want moisture? In your boat.Trust me I know.I sank my first drag boat and it didn't have no foam .Know that I think about it ,if you own a hot tub look at the back side of it .What you see is urathane foam.In this case the foam has been sprayed on to the fiberglass backed acrylic tub which was vacume molded.I do belive it also has anti-microbial properties. This meaning it resists mold and mildew. The auto industry also uses various types of foams for sound deadening and water proofing, look at the back of a new car door panel and you'll probably find some injection molded urathane foam. Now get this,I did that top about 8 yrs. ago. It's been out in all the blizzards and wicked heat and hasn't moved a bit and hasn't fallen off. If you want more info get ahold of me.If there's enough intrest in this process I could offer it as a service through Jaz Ground Zero Inc. JGZ |
