Who is down for "whatever"?

Bud Lite has been marketing taking over a town for a big party weekend. Well the secret town they took over is Crested Butte. They paid CB $500,000 to host the event. Rumor has it they've invested $24 million on the event.

Today about 6 large (767) charter jets have brought 1400 winners in. They have gated off Elk Avenue in CB, and painted the street blue. Aparently Michael Jordan, Pam Anderson, Jay-Z & Beyonce, and Aerosmith are all here. I think you'll be seeing an upcoming marketing campaign all based on this weekend.

And this was parked on the tarmac of the Gunnison airport to greet the guests.

They only gave out 3500 entry wristbands to locals, and since I work I didn't get one. I probably don't want to go anyways, 5000 people crammed into 5 blocks, doesn't sound like a ton of fun. Sour grapes.

Been following this. I can't imagine 5000 on elk ace would be much fun but would be neat the check it out. We saw wrist bands being sold on Craigslist.

Its great exposure. Of course some people are bitching. CB is a funny place. There are lots of people who don't understand that without tourists they couldn't or wouldn't want to live there. They want nothing to change, and noone to visit or move there, "Melasters".

We are at an economic disadvantage, due to our location. And because of that, I don't think we will ever grow into a monstrosity resort. I feel we need to take advantage of opportunities to expose our town to potential customers. Plus its a weekend that wouldn't normally be busy, now the hotels in Gunnison are getting overflow from CB.

Sorry, just my rant about what I'm seeing on the news & FB.

Some part of me would like to go up and see the spectacle. Just because stuff like this doesn't happen around here much. Two of the first 3 Winter X-games were held in CB, I remember spending the whole weekend up in CB. They weren't the event they are now, but it was cool & fun, for a twenty something. If I was twenty-something now, I'd be up there right now. But, now, I'm sure I'd get tired of it quick. Probably before I could park my car.

Damn, I'm old.

Take the money and run. Maybe it will be the birth of some weird annual party or something, you never know.

It looks like that is what we did. The county estimates about $2 million was spent in Gunnison County, in addition to the $500,000 Bud gave Crested Butte. Most the hotels in Gunnison were booked 100% on a weekend with 20%-30% average occupancy.

Overall it went off without a hitch. Even had less than average ER visits & ambulance rides than most weekends in CB.

The exposure is going to be great. There is already an article in Powder magazine claiming it was "the greatest ski town party ever." High praise from the premier freeskiing magazine around. Not too shabby.

That still looks like a lot of darn people in CB.

Anyone ever been to the Steamboat Music Fest? That is a blast!
